Q&A with Ryan Duffy, Bridgepoint Consulting
What led you to a career in consulting?
Throughout my education and work experience, I’ve always gravitated towards and enjoyed work that requires creativity to solve problems. As a consultant, you are presented with unique challenges that often do not have a single or clear solution.
I knew that a consulting career would allow me to face these sorts of challenges and develop a wide range of skills and knowledge. I especially enjoy getting to work with a variety of clients across different industry verticals.
The opportunity to continually learn and then apply that learning to solve future problems is very rewarding.
How would you describe the culture at Bridgepoint?
Bridgepoint has a very supportive and encouraging culture. The team wants to see everyone succeed and progress towards their career goals.
With a lot of our work being project and team based, the collaborative environment also contributes to a very enjoyable and empowering culture. Your colleagues are always willing to share ideas, suggestions and help when a need arises.
What attracted you to Bridgepoint, and when did you know that #TeamBridgepoint was for you?
Bridgepoint’s position as a respected and fast-growing consulting firm really appealed to me when considering different organizations. Having an opportunity to contribute to the growth of a business and practice within Bridgepoint was a key draw for me.
That opportunity continues today as we keep growing and is exciting to be a part of. I first knew that the culture of #TeamBridgepoint was for me during my interview process. Those initial discussions with team members and leadership at Bridgepoint really helped paint a picture of the company’s culture.
Having now been at Bridgepoint for over 5 years, my experience working alongside the team continues to reaffirm that the culture is a great fit for me.
Talk to us about who you are outside of consulting.
I like to spend free time enjoying the food and music scene in Austin; trying new restaurants, going to concerts, festivals, etc. Music has always been a big pastime of mine, so I’m always listening to new records as well as playing some music on my own.
I also spend a lot of time visiting family in Minnesota (where I grew up) and traveling to experience different countries, nature, and cultures.
You can find me rooting for the Baylor Bears in college sports and Minnesota professional teams — outside of Austin FC, of course!
What advice would you give someone who is considering a career in consulting?
Consulting is an exciting career path because you are always learning about new technologies and evolving business processes.
I believe a quality that separates a great consultant from the pack is the ability to think holistically about a solution, understand potential impacts across other areas and anticipate what questions or issues might arise.
This skill grows with experience, of course, so a hunger to learn and challenge yourself to take on unfamiliar tasks is really important.
Persevering through some struggles, putting in the hard work and drawing from the knowledge of our talented colleagues at Bridgepoint has led to my most significant learning and professional growth.
