Employee Spotlight: Elsa Reyes – Consultant

Our Bridgepoint crew is a talented and unique group of savvy pros. Ever wonder what it’s like to work at our management consulting firm? Here’s a peek at a day in the life of a Consultant.

Hi, I’m Elsa, and I work in Bridgepoint’s Financial Consulting Practice in Austin. I’ve been a member of the Bridgepoint team for one year.

At Bridgepoint, I’m responsible for…

providing excellent Finance & Accounting Services to clients that need help with anything ranging from budgeting and forecasting to accounting standard implementations. One of the areas that we have been getting a lot of requests for lately is around the new Revenue Recognition and Lease Accounting standards.

I got my role at Bridgepoint…

perusing through LinkedIn for my next job. I kept bumping into the Bridgepoint Consultant job posting. At the beginning of my job search, I was focused on looking for a traditional corporate FP&A role, but kept the possibility of consulting in the back of my mind. My desire to explore different businesses and industries grew, as did my desire to utilize my accounting and finance skills in various capacities. One day, I took the chance and applied via LinkedIn. The process was straightforward, and I immediately felt at ease with the wonderful staff and leadership at Bridgepoint. One year later, I can proudly say that I have no regrets about changing my career path.

My morning routine starts…

around 5:30 AM. I usually play with my dogs and then go to the gym or for a run. I like to take my time making breakfast and sipping coffee at the kitchen table while enjoying a conversation with my husband. Occasionally, I try to squeeze in light housework (if time allows). Then, it’s time for a shower and getting ready to face the workday.

A typical working day for me may consist of…

starting my workday around 8:30 or 9:00 AM. I usually say hello to people as I walk to my workstation and fire up my computer. By this time, I am ready to tackle the checklist I prepared the night before. Before I know it, 12:30 PM is here and I eat lunch, which is usually leftovers from the night before. Then, it’s time for coffee or tea…and back to work I go! Some days involve back-to-back meetings, but I prefer the days where I can schedule enough time to get work done, but also meet with people to go over outstanding items or touch base on projects. On a good day, I am out of the office by 5:30-6:00 PM, but I am no stranger to longer days. I like to leave work knowing I accomplished as much as I could have and in the best way possible.

Something people don’t know about my role is…

the success of my work heavily depends on clear and consistent communication. I think people often idealize finance and accounting professionals as very introverted excel nerds who would rather be confined to their cubicle or office. The truth is that excel models cannot reflect accurate financials and/or analysis, without first listening to the client’s needs and consistently communicating changes, reviews, etc. Without building strong relationships to facilitate communication, our work in finance and accounting will not be a value add for decision-makers.

My proudest moment at Bridgepoint was…

when I was fortunate enough to work with two other wonderful Bridgepointers on a Revenue Recognition (ASC 606) implementation. It was a fun and energetic environment because we all had the same drive to get the work done accurately and efficiently while getting to know each other. We worked hard to implement ASC 606, and that first-month end close when all the pieces were in place was extraordinarily rewarding. I am very proud of the work I did to help make that possible!

The thing I like most about working at Bridgepoint is…

that our employees are highly valued by the organization and our clients. The Principals want people who work for Bridgepoint to be happy and successful. I feel fortunate that I can have clear and honest communication about my goals, expectations, and struggles with the Principals. It makes me feel like the hard work I put in is valued and encouraged.

Social causes that I am passionate about are…

Jolt Action 501c(4). As the Board President, I enjoy taking part in our movement to empower voters by volunteering at fundraisers, voter registration events, and speaking about advocacy issues we are committed to. This work is important to me because as the daughter of poor and under-educated Mexican immigrants, I know the struggles we faced are common across many communities. My education and voice can encourage us, and help to unite and uplift us so that future generations benefit from the foundation we build today.

On the weekend, you’ll find me…

sitting around like a couch potato with my dogs and husband, and other times I am up and about getting yard work and chores done around the house. One thing for certain is that on Saturday mornings you might catch a glimpse of me running around Austin with a running group called Austin Fit. On Sundays, I am usually at the clay studio perfecting my form on the pottery wheel. The weekends are my favorite time of the week because the possibilities of things to do are endless!

If I wasn’t doing this as a career, I’d be…

a performer or writer of some kind. It’s fun to engage with audiences and get to tell my story or any story from my perspective.

The best career or leadership advice I’ve ever been given was…

“You can do it/Si se puede” and “You’re amazing”
